Dan and Larry Both Bring Brenda Breakfast

Brenda is at home, waiting for Larry to return from a mysterious errand. When she hears someone at the door, she gets up to get it and is surprised to find Dan there holding a little white paper bag.

Brenda: Dan! (laughing happily) What a nice surprise. Come in!

Dan comes through the door, and she closes it behind him.

Brenda: What -- did your dad already call you and tell you this wonderful news?
Dan: No, well, actually, I just got back from an all-nighter in the ER.

He starts shrugging off his coat.

Dan: I haven't spoken to Dad since yesterday afternoon.
Brenda: No? Well, your dad was just here.

Brenda tries to take his jacket from him, but he pulls it back slightly, seeming worried.

Dan: Well, what did he want?
Brenda: What do you think he wanted?

Dan puts his jacket on the couch.

Brenda: He wanted to talk to me about terminating my pregnancy.
Dan: What did he say?
Brenda: Well, I didn't do it! Of course I didn't do it. Don't look at me like that.
Dan: (confused) Well, what's -- what's the surprise?
Brenda: The baby kicked.
Dan: Wait, wait -- I don't understand you, okay?
Brenda: No --
Dan: Hasn't the baby kicked before?
Brenda: Yes, but the good news is that Larry had never felt it before, and you should have seen him. He put my hand there, and he just threw out all arguments that he had with me. They went flying like -- like sagebrush across the prairie.
Dan: Are you telling me that he agrees with your decision?
Brenda: Not only does he agree with my decision -- he's gonna support me full-term to get this baby into the world. Isn't that wonderful?
Dan: That's wonderful!

He happily hugs her.

Dan: Oh, God! That's wonderful!
Brenda: I'm so happy!

They break apart from the hug, and Dan smiles.

Dan: See, I knew he had it in him and that he would eventually come and, you know, come around and listen to Dr. Dan.
Brenda: Oh, oh --
Dan: So --
Brenda: Well, I think what it took was a nice, swift kick in the belly -- you know what I mean?

Dan laughs.

Brenda: This one is going to town today.
Dan: Well, do you think that maybe now he'll, uh, let me go back on your case?
Brenda: I hope so.
Dan: Yeah, well, I might as well give it a shot, right? What do I have to lose?
Brenda: Yeah, well, I really would like you to. (nodding) I'd like to have both of you on my case.
Dan: Well, you know what I think you need?

He holds up the bag he brought.

Dan: I think you need a good, healthy breakfast, my dear.
Brenda: (reaching for the bag) I was wondering -- what did you bring me here? What's in the bag?

Dan pulls the bag away from her with a mock sternness.

Dan: Ah! Have you eaten yet?
Brenda: No. Larry woke me up, and then, um, we got to talking and stuff. So, no, I haven't had any breakfast.
Dan: Then I've got perfect timing.

Brenda looks at him in wonderment.

Brenda: You really do, you know that? You have perfect timing. You were here when I was down and out and everything was horrible, and you're here when everything's great!
Dan: You know, it's terrific to see you smiling again.

She gives him an odd look, like she is worried about something but doesn't want to voice her worry so instead changes the subject.

Brenda: Why don't you stay for breakfast here?
Dan: Uh, I don't know, Brenda. I really -- I'm really beat. I just, you know --
Brenda: Have you eaten yet?
Dan: Well, like I said, I just put in an all-nighter at the ER, and I'm really beat. I don't know --
Brenda: Well --
Dan: I think I should split.
Brenda: You, um, just unload your bag there, and I'll go in and get some -- you want some coffee or some orange juice, or you can -- you can have both. Whatever you --

Dan gives in.

Dan: Okay, okay, I'll have both -- orange juice for the kid.
Brenda: Okay, yeah, he's very hungry. So just unpack that stuff, and I'll be right back.

Brenda heads into the kitchen, while Dan turns to watch her as she goes.

When the scene returns, Brenda and Dan are sitting on the couch together eating the breakfast he brought and the juice Brenda got them from the kitchen.

Brenda: That muffin --
Dan: Try it. It's so good. (whispering) So good.
Brenda: Is it good?

She pops the piece of muffin into her mouth as Dan stares at her lips.

Brenda: (through a mouthful) Mm!
Dan: Mm!
Brenda: So fresh!

Dan chuckles and starts to open the jar of jam.

Dan: It's straight from the oven!
Brenda: Is that what they told you?

Suddenly, the front door opens, and Larry comes through with his own bag of breakfast food, but at first he is turned away so he doesn't see Dan is there with Brenda.

Larry: Okay, healthy breakfast, healthy food for --
Brenda: Hello, Larry!

He stops when he sees Dan.

Larry: What the --! Well, what's this?
Dan: Oh, well, I guess great minds think alike.
Larry: Well, if I knew you were gonna bring the food, I wouldn't have gone out --
Brenda: I didn't know!
Larry: -- and spent a fortune.

Brenda quickly gets up to go greet Larry.

Brenda: Oh, he just brought -- showed up and brought all these goodies with him.

Dan gets up.

Dan: Yeah, Brenda told me the good news about you finally accepting her decision to continue the pregnancy.
Brenda: Yeah.

Larry smiles and puts his arm around Brenda, who beams at Dan.

Dan: And, Dad, I really -- I understand.

Dan pauses to consider his words carefully.

Dan: What I really want to say is that I hope we stop fighting and we join forces.
Larry: Amen. I'd like that, Dan.
Brenda: I would, too. I'd like to have both of you on our side.
Dan: Yeah, you know, well, with my good looks and his brains --
Larry: (warningly) Hey --
Dan: We could be an unbeatable team.

Larry chuckles.

Dan: Seriously, though. Brenda, I know I speak for the both of us when I say that we'll do our best to help you bring a healthy baby into this world.
Brenda: Well, I know it'll happen.
Larry: Look, we got enough food for an army. Why don't we sit down and have some breakfast?
Brenda: Yeah!

Dan's mood turns a little awkward, and he turns to get his jacket from the couch.

Dan: Uh, well, you know, I'd really love to, Pop, but I just -- like I was telling Brenda, I just put in a grueling all-nighter in the ER, and I'm really --
Brenda: Oh, no, come on -- why don't you stay? Stay.
Dan: (considering it) Uh. No, no, no, no, I can't, I can't, I can't -- I can't. (stepping toward Larry) Uh, Dad, uh, I'll get in touch with you real soon and you'll give me an update on Brenda's chart --
Larry: Give me a call, and we'll set up a date.
Dan: Okay, terrific.

Dan turns to Brenda.

Dan: Um --
Brenda: Yeah. I'll see you.

He kisshes her cheek.

Dan: You take care, okay?
Brenda: Yeah.

Dan steps away from her but keeps his hand on her arm reassuringly.

Dan: I'll see you.

Dan leaves, and Brenda turns to Larry.

Brenda: Well, what do you want to do? Sit down and, uh, stuff ourselves, or go open up a muffin stand on the corner?

Larry chuckles.

Brenda: It's up to you.

Larry gives her a little kiss.
